The Kimo Hut stands alone on a hill in rural New South Wales, just outside Gundagai. It is the most recent addition to Kimo Estate, a second generation farm that has expanded to host weddings and provide lodging that showcases the area's natural beauty. It's a place to unplug, literally, and forget about the stresses of contemporary life.
This is the 28 m² JR's hut by Anthony Hunt Design + Luke Stanley Architects at Kimo Estate is an outback Australian residence.
Given the hut's 'eco' brief and secluded setting, sustainable Australian hardwoods were a natural option. A two-person owner-builder team needs to be able to readily access and manage materials on-site.
The design of the cottages was inspired by a traditional 'A' frame tent, which gives both shelter from and connection to the natural world. The building is anchored by an expressive hardwood framework that defines the internal spaces and frames views of the neighboring farmlands. Timber is used throughout the hut, with handcrafted elements evoking the essence of the property's agricultural structures.
