The Yuandang Pedestrian Bridge, project by Brearley Architects + Urbanists (BAU) marks the union of Jiangsu Province and Shanghai.
The 586-meter bridge is a hybrid structure that combines landscape, infrastructure, and architecture. It is strategically placed at the crossroads of two jurisdictions.
The bridge's shape is reminiscent of a ribbon and mirrors the water ripples on Yuandang Lake below. The bridge incorporates trees and bushes, creating the illusion of a floating garden joining the two sides.
The bridge deck is separated into three bands: a bicycle route, a vegetation band, and a pedestrian path. The winding bridge features three enlarged portions for relaxing and admiring the beauty of the lake.
Taking cues from local sculptural traditions, the bridge's pavilion investigates current mathematical modelling to produce a porous wall that serves as both artwork and playground. The bridge is a living entity that combines ecology, transportation, scenery, and culture.
